The
LSO is set apart from other international orchestras by the depth of its
commitment to music education, reaching over 40,000 people each year.
LSO Discovery, the energetic and award-winning education and community
programme is now in its 20th year and enables the LSO to offer people
of all ages an opportunity to get involved in music-making and to enter
the soundworld of the Orchestra. LSO Discovery specifically promotes music
education and musicmaking in the local community and in East London Schools
and LSO musicians and animateurs combine classical music education with
new technology. LSO St Luke’s, the home of LSO Discovery, provides
a unique mix of public and private events for all types of music lovers.
Through the technological facilities at LSO St Luke’s, the Orchestra’s
education initiatives can be offered regionally, nationally and internationally.
In addition, LSO St Luke’s works with key artistic partners to present
a varied programme of evening and daytime events, including BBC Radio
3 and TV, Barbican and the Guildhall School.
Since its formation over 100 years ago, the London Symphony Orchestra is widely regarded to be one of the leading orchestras of the world on the strength of its performances alone but there is much more to its work than concerts in concert halls: as well as LSO Discovery, its many activities include a record company and exciting work in the field of information technology.
